A website, like a bush, can become a tangled mess if simply left to grow without being carefully trimmed along the way. Over time, you might notice that some new pages of your site include information essentially duplicated from other pages that were placed in your sitemap long ago.

This starts shedding light on your need to spare time for looking through that sitemap and cutting away superfluous content where you can find it. This can be a massive undertaking if many parts of your site have been left untouched for years, but meta robot tags can come to the rescue.

Rise of the - delightfully useful - machines

What are meta robot tags? These are pieces of code that are imbedded in your site, typically its header, and direct search engines towards the pages of your site to index and follow. You can tweak your site's meta robot tags to improve your site's search rankings in relatively little time.

Let's assume that you have identified problematic-looking pages of your site. You could adjust the tags to tell search engine crawlers - programs capable of scanning sites so that they can be indexed - not to look at the dubious pages. Those pages could, hence, become effectively invisible to Google.

Now you can get on with spring cleaning

In effect, then, using meta robot tags in this way is rather like putting a "Do Not Disturb" notice on your door when you are busy cleaning the room behind it. With search engine crawlers out of the way, you have extra breathing space and can use it to tidy up a site to spare you needing those tags.
