These days, you might make many of your online search queries by vocalising them. Voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are built into many smart devices — and rising in popularity.

Every month, there are over a billion voice searches — and this number is expected to surpass two billion in 2024. However, when tweaking your website in the hope of attracting visitors through such searches, you should be careful to avoid these rookie errors…

Sticking to short, succinct keywords

Even if you have reaped a lot of search engine optimisation (SEO) success from doing this in the past, you must remember that voice searches tend to be longer and more conversational than typed searches.

For this reason, you should give your web copy a fair few ‘long-tail’ keywords, i.e. relatively lengthy keywords homing in on specific products or services that you offer. So, an antivirus software purveyor might want to focus on terms like ‘antivirus software for Windows 11’.

Neglecting ‘the five Ws’

The poet Rudyard Kipling famously wrote: “I keep six honest serving-men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.”

If Kipling was alive today, he would doubtless have excelled at voice search SEO, putting together web content that answers questions beginning with any of these Ws (or indeed, the H).

Not incorporating colloquial phrases

Often, people speak markedly differently to how they write. In the former instance, slang terms and abbreviations are likelier to slip in, while textual communication is usually more formal.

Throwing in some casual language can therefore help in rendering your content more voice-friendly, although you should make sure such an approach would suit your specific brand.
